The Sabie Xperience Newsletter – March 2022
Mehmet Muran Ildan said, "There is a hidden message in every waterfall. It says, if you are flexible, falling will not hurt you." Chances are he wasn't talking about cascading gracefully over your handlebars down a steep single track, but it's not bad advice.

WHY WATERFALLS?

Mehmet Muran Ildan said, “There is a hidden message in every waterfall. It says, if you are flexible, falling will not hurt you.” Chances are he wasn’t talking about cascading gracefully over your handlebars down a steep single track, but it’s not bad advice.

There are two things that come to mind when one thinks of Sabie. Trees, and waterfalls, of which there are seven alone in the immediate vicinity, namely Horsehoe Falls, Lone Creek, Bridal Veil, Maria Shires, Mac-Mac, Forest Falls, and Glynnis Falls, each of them unique in its splendour.

We’re immensely proud of these beauties, for which we can take no credit, of course, so we’ve dedicated the first of our three-part medals to these gorgeous natural wonders of Sabie.

Enter for the Challenge or Lite routes and you’ll get to see one of these beauties up close and personal!

NUTRITION – WHAT, WHEN & HOW OFTEN?

Quintus Vermeulen, a former Sabie resident currently living in New Zealand, has been hard at work on the bike improving his times and technical skills. We spoke to him about his approach to nutrition and how he preps for a race:

Carbohydrate-heavy dinners leading up to the race, preferably some sort of pasta dish. Dinner before a race is always pasta, garlic bread and steak.

Breakfast two hours before a race usually compromises of oats with peanut butter and honey with a cup of coffee. 30-60 minutes before the race I’ll snack on a banana or jelly sweets. During the race, I’ll aim to have an energy gel every 30-40 minutes.

I’ll eat an energy bar when I’m feeling hungry, which is usually an hour or more into the race. It’s so easy to forget about hydration so keep sipping throughout!

Don’t try new products on race day – always trial your products during training sessions to see what works for your body.

THE MEDAL

We’re excited to present the themed medals for 2022/2023/2024, each one representing a quintessential aspect of our town. Each medal forms part of a bigger design, like a prize puzzle, so you’ll need to compete in all three races to build the full medal! One piece is roughly the size of a coaster, and can even be used as such. Together they form a larger circle that can be displayed as a reminder of your strength and endurance or used in the kitchen as a wooden trivet. Form follows function 😉
